Summary of the Job:

The HVAC Installation Technician is responsible for the layout, assembly, and installation of residential HVAC systems, including ductwork, split and package systems, gas piping, venting, and electrical components. The role requires precision, adherence to safety protocols, and coordination with other workers to complete installations effectively and efficiently.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties are representative of the tasks expected from an HVAC Installation Technician. These responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Handle stress and meet job demands in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Cooperate and work effectively with team members.
  • Promote and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Select appropriate materials, pipe types, and equipment for each job site.
  • Plan installation or repairs, avoiding obstructions and interference with other workers.
  • Cut, thread, bend, and assemble various types of pipes (metal and nonmetal, such as iron, steel, copper, and plastic).
  • Connect pipes using methods such as threading, soldering, brazing, or cementing joints.
  • Secure pipes to structures with brackets, clamps, and hangers.
  • Install and maintain refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, including compressors and piping.
  • Test system for leaks by increasing pressure and observing pressure gauges.
  • Read and interpret blueprints to determine necessary materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Work independently and oversee up to three apprentices to ensure productive work. May take on the role of crew leader.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of field experience.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • OSHA 10-hour certification completed.
  • CPR / First Aid certification.
  • EPA certification to handle refrigerants.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic computer knowledge is required for job-related tasks.
  • Ability to work independently and supervise apprentices.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

The physical and environmental conditions described here are representative of what is expected in the role of an HVAC Installation Technician:

  • Ability to ride or drive in vehicles for extended periods (2+ hours).
  • Work may occur in varying outdoor temperatures, from extreme heat (above 90°F) to freezing cold (below 32°F).
  • Exposure to all weather conditions and cramped workspaces.
  • Frequent exposure to loud or distracting noise levels.
  • Requires frequent use of hands to operate tools, control equipment, or handle materials.
  • Must be able to stand, sit, talk, hear, climb, and reach above shoulder height frequently throughout the day.
  • Must frequently stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Occasionally required to lift heavy objects up to 75 pounds.
  • Potential exposure to hazardous conditions, chemicals (requiring knowledge of safety data sheets), or heights.
